PDF We recently discussed UK law firm, Davenport Lyons, which had been criticized widely for running a controversial campaign supposedly to stamp out copyright infringement, but seemed a lot more like extortion to many. Basically it would contract with software companies to enforce their copyright... and would then send out a ton of demand letters (based on questionable evidence) requiring cash payments to avoid being sued. Not surprisingly, many people just paid up rather than risk getting sued -- even if they were innocent. Of course, all the controversy and negative publicity seemed to get back to the company. High profile clients like Atari dropped them. Last month, some noticed a nearly identical campaign, but this time coming from a different company called ACS Law. The only problem? A little investigating suggested that the two firms were clearly related -- with ACS using documents created by Davenport Lyons.
Things continue to get more ridiculous, as TorrentFreak noticed that an article apparently published by ACS Law was actually plagiarized from a variety of different sources, basically cut and pasted together with no credit or citations given at all. Remarkably, in some cases, articles with the exact opposite view of ACS Law were copied with paragraphs that just had an added sentence to the end which completely contradicted what the original article said.
It really is quite amusing how often those who insist they're big supporters of intellectual property and not "stealing" the works of others always seem to get caught red-handed in plagiarism and copying others' work. In the meantime, how often do we see supporters of more reasonable copyright (or no copyright) get caught doing this? Hmm?

The history of the relationship between America and the Muslim World is deeper and more complex than the common perception might suggest. Thomas Jefferson taught himself Arabic using his own Quran kept in his personal library, and had the first known presidential Iftaar by breaking fast with the Tunisian Ambassador at sunset. President Dwight Eisenhower attended the dedication ceremony of the Islamic Center in Washington, D.C. on June 28, 1957. President Bill Clinton issued the first presidential greeting for Ramadan, appointed the first Muslim American ambassador, M. Osman Siddique, to Fiji, and sent the first presidential Eid al-Adha greeting to Muslims. And one year after President George W. Bush placed the Holy Quran in the White House library in 2005, Representative Keith Ellison was took the oath of office on the same Quran owned by Thomas Jefferson two hundred years before.
With his speech in Cairo, the President will lay another marker, addressing America’s relationship with the Muslim World in the heart of the Middle East. Whereas the past years and decades have deepened the rift in that relationship, the President will seek a new start by opening up a serious, honest dialogue to find areas of common interest where we agree, and new ways of communication where we do not. By continuing unprecedented outreach to the Muslim World, the President is strengthening national security and opening up new opprtunities to address some of the problems that have seemed so intractable over recent years.

PrintEmailPDF Christopher Hitchens says that if you want to give a girl a good night out in Washington you should take her to New York. Barack Obama obviously thinks the same. Having promised his wife Michelle during the election campaign last year that he would take her to a Broadway show when it was all finished, he duly headed north at the weekend for a performance of Joe Turner's Come and Gone, a play by August Wilson about the migration of freed slaves from the deep south. A promise is a promise, so it is perhaps unfair to criticise the president too much for fulfilling his private campaign pledge. Nevertheless, a president who wants to wean Americans off their emissions-heavy travel habits was not setting a good example by taking two helicopter trips and a plane to New York and back, as the Obamas did. Nor, however excellent the Broadway performance, was the trip fair to Washington, whose theatres are one of its own great attractions. A few blocks from the White House, the Shakespeare theatre, under Michael Kahn's direction, is a particularly fine company, but the Arena and the Studio also do excellent innovative work. There are grander theatres at the Kennedy Center, the Warner and the National as well as the delightful small Folger, part of the Shakespeare library on Capitol Hill. Presidential trips to the Washington theatre have a bad history, of course, but the Obamas could have plenty of good nights out in their own city with a fraction of the carbon footprint it took to go to New York.
